Overview of PhD Program



IIIT Nagpur offers Ph. D programme under following categories

1. Industry Candidates:

  • Extern Candidate from Industry (EX-I)
  • Intern Sponsored Candidate from Industry (IN-IS)

2. Academic Institution(s) Candidates:

  • Extern Self-financed candidates from Academic Institutions (Ex-A)
  • Intern Sponsored Candidate from Academic Institutions (IN-AS)

3. Other Candidates:

  • Intern Self Sponsored Candidates (IN-U)
  • Intern externally funded or sponsored or Project Staff Candidates (IN-ES)

The overall operation of Ph. D. programme is governed by the Academic Regulations of the Institute. The students are required to refer the PhD Rule Book for academic regulations and other details.

 Admission Modality

Admission to the Ph D programme is made once in a year against the advertisement, which can be checked at Click here, the candidates have to apply through online application form.                                                                                                   
A candidate is normally admitted to the Ph.D. programme after passing his/her Ph.D. qualifying/entrance examination followed by interview.
The Entrance Examination tests the student's knowledge, grasp of fundamentals and ability to apply them in novel situations. The exam is designed to be equivalent to the standard, content and intent of the comprehensive examination of the named courses.

Application Procedure:

  • The applications are to be filled in online mode with all relevant documents attached and a separate hard copy of the same application filled Online must be sent by post along with documents. To avail the online form Gmail account is essential.

  • Applicants are advised to note that they have to submit online application as well as send the hard copy to the Institute. The hard copy of the application received at the Institute shall be considered for processing.

  • All applications which are not in prescribed form / without relevant supporting enclosures / received after the last date / without application fees will be out rightly rejected. No correspondence shall be entertained in this regard. Interim Correspondence will also not be entertained or replied to.

  • Institute will not be responsible under any circumstances for any sort of postal delay/loss of the application form.

Examination Pattern:

 

Entrance Test:

The question paper for entrance test shall comprise of two sections.

 Section-1 shall be common for all categories and would comprise of questions on General Ability and Communication Skills.

 The Section-2 shall have questions based on the syllabus for respective categories as under:

 

For Candidates from Industry (EX-I & IN-IS): Basic Engineering Maths; Basic Programming and Engineering Knowledge and Skills; Engineering Logical Analysis, Arithmetic, Industry Standards.

For all remaining category Candidate (EX-A, IN-AS, IN-U, IN-ES)

Presentation on Statement of Purpose (SoP):

1. All the candidates are required to attach a Statement of Purpose (SoP) in the format available in the Annexure – 2 to the online soft copy as well as hard copy of the application.

2. Candidates applying under the category Industry Candidates (EX-I)/(IN-IS) are required to give a short presentation of maximum 5 slides specifying a brief of intended / targeted problems at the time of interview.

 

Selection Process:

The PhD Admissions shall be on the basis of Entrance Test and Interview. The procedure shall be as follows:

Stage 1: Entrance Test - Eligible candidates are required to appear physically at the Institute Permanent Campus for the Entrance Test to be held in the Computer Labs of the Institute.

Qualifying Score in the Test: The minimum qualifying score shall be a normalized score decided taking into account the number of candidates to be called for interview. But in no case it will be less than 40%. The normalization will be done by considering the top most score to be 100% and scaling the scores of other candidates accordingly.

Stage 2: Interview – Candidates qualifying the Entrance Test shall be eligible to appear for Personal Interview through Offline Mode

Stage 3: Calculation of Combined Score – A Combined Score shall be calculated on the basis of score in Entrance Test, Score in Personal Interview and GATE

* Candidates with GATE Qualification shall be obtaining the allotted marks. The Final Merit List shall be prepared on the basis of Combined Score.

 

Duration of PhD:

1. Three (3) years from the date of joining the programme till the date of Submission of Thesis for candidates of Ex-A, IN-AS, IN-U, IN-ES.

2. For Industry candidates, three years if posses Master’s Degree otherwise Four years for candidate with Bachelor’s Degree.
