Elements of Electrical Engineering Lab

Elements of Electrical Engineering laboratory is one of the labs which students have to go through in first semester of B. Tech. programme. In this lab students get familiarize with different electrical components such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, supply system such as dc and ac (three phase and single phase), measuring instruments such as voltmeter, ammeter, wattmeter, CRO, tachometer (speed measurements). Students learn about ratings of equipments, electrical connections, characteristics of electrical machines and verify fundamental laws of electric circuits and electrical machines. Lab has panel workstations on which various experiments can be performed. Panel workstation contains different electric circuits, CRO, voltmeters (AC, DC), ammeters (AC, DC) and transformer. Other equipments in lab are single and three phase ac supply, dc machines, induction motors, lamp loads and tachometers. Some of the major experiments in lab are given below;

  • Use of measuring instruments and safety precautions in electrical laboratory
  • To verify Kirchoff's voltage law (KVL) and Kirchoff's current law (KCL) in resistive circuit
  • To verify superposition theorem
  • To determine resonant frequency of series and parallel RLC circuit
  • To measure single phase power by voltmeter and ammeter methods
  • To measure three phase power by two wattmeter method
  • To perform open circuit and short circuit tests on single phase transformer
  • To determine torque speed characteristics of DC shunt motor
  • To find torque slip characteristics of induction motor
